Changing your DNS Numbers
MacOS and Windows9x

How to set your DNS numbers for MartNet.com

NOTE: THESE INSTRUCTIONS ARE FOR REALLY OLD COMPUTER SYSTEMS (like Windows 3.11 or MacOS 7) AND SHOULD NOT BE USED UNLESS YOU HAVE AN OLD SYSTEM AND KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING MARTNET NO LONGER SUPPORTS THESE INSTRUCTIONS OR ANCIENT SYSTEMS, SO BE CAREFUL.

-----------

A. Windows Instructions

NOTE: You will have to REBOOT your machine to effect these changes at the end of these steps. Don't start this process with your unsaved Doctoral Thesis open in MS Word...

This is the simplest way to ensure that you get good connections.

For advanced users, the actual new DNS numbers follow this text.

1. Double-click on "My Computer," upper-left corner of the desktop.
2. In the window that appears, double-click "Dial-Up Networking."
3. Find the dial-up connection you use to connect to MartNet.
4. Right-click (once) on the icon for this connection, and in the menu that appears, select "properties."
5. In the panel that appears, there are several "tabs" across the top. The second one is called "Server Types." Click on this.
6. At the top, "Type of Dialup Server" should start with "PPP: Internet, Windows NT Server, Windows 98."
7. Below that are a list of checkboxes. The only things that should be checked are "Enable software compression" and, at the bottom, "TCP/IP." If anything else is checked, uncheck it.
8. Click on the "TCP/IP Setttings" button across from the last checked item.
9. The top option should be Server Assigned IP Address, the middle should be Server Assigned name server addresses, and the bottom two options should both be checked (IP Header Compression, Default Gateway).
10. Click OK on this panel, then on the panel under it, then close the Dial-Up Networking folder (then you may be asked to reboot).

You're done!

Note: If you wish to manually set the DNS servers, the new numbers are:

Primary: 216.126.128.40
Secondary: 216.126.136.250

If you've followed the above instructions, don't worry, you don't need to know what to do with these numbers.

B. Macintosh Instructions

1. Click (once) on the apple in the upper left hand corner of your screen
2. Drag the mouse downwards untill the "Control Panels" folder is highlighted.
3. Once that is highlighted a menu will appear. Highlight "TCP/IP" and click once. This will open the TCP/IP control panel

4. At the bottom of the window, there will be a white box with "Name Server Addr.:" next to it. Select all the numbers in the white box, and delete them.
5. On the first line in the white box type "216.126.128.40" (do not type the quotation marks), then hit the return key.
6. This will take you to the next line where you should type "216.126.136.250" (still don't type the quotation marks).
7. The white box should now read:

216.126.128.40
216.126.136.250

8. After you have finished typing in the numbers, click (once) on the square in the upper left hand corner of the "TCP/IP" window. An alert box will appear that asks "Do you want to save these configurations?" Click on "Save."

9. Pat yourself on the back. You just changed the DNS numbers. :)
