Back up your mail message files in Outlook

To back up your mail message files, follow these steps:

  • Review your mail message folders and delete any unneeded messages
  • Click the File menu, select Folder > Compact All Folders
  • Find the files with the extension .mbx and .idx on your computer. These files are usually located in a folder under C:Windows Application Data Microsoft Outlook Express Mail. The files might be in a different folder if you did not accept the default folders during setup
  • Copy the files to a backup folder on your computer, a floppy disk, or a network drive

Note: Each message folder has one message file (*.mbx) and one index file (*.idx). There's is no need to copy the *.idx files. Some message files might be too large to back up onto a floppy disk.

How to automatically sort mail

Outlook Express uses an Inbox Assistant to help you manage your Mail. To configure the Assistant, select Inbox Assistant from the Tools menu. Then click the Add button to create a new sort rule. The options are: Move, Copy, Forward to a different address, Reply, Do not download from the server or Delete off Server.

How to Back Up your Account Information

If you want to backup your Account Information, follow these steps:

  • Start the Registry Editor
  • Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER Software Microsoft Internet Account Manager Accounts
  • Select the Accounts key
  • From the menu select Registry > Export Registry File
  • Select a name for the file, select the location where you want to save it, and from the Export range, make sure that Selected branch is selected
  • Click Save

If you want to restore your Accounts Information, simply Double click on the registry file, and the values will be imported to your registry (you will have to re-boot for the process to be completed).

Mail - How to backup your Inbox Assistant rules in Outlook

If you want to backup your Inbox Assistant rules, follow these steps:

  • Start the Registry Editor
  • Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER Software Microsoft Outlook Express Mail Inbox Rules
  • Select the Inbox Rules key
  • From the menu select Registry > Export Registry File
  • Enter a name for the file, select the location where you want to save it, and from the Export range, make sure that Selected branch is selected
  • Click Save

If you want to restore your Inbox Assistant rules, simply Double click on the registry file, and the values will be merged with your registry.

How to change the 'new mail' sound.

If you want to change the sound which playes when new mail arrives, don't go looking in Outlook Express! You have to change a Windows sound event.

  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel and Open Sounds
  • In the Events: window, scroll down to the entry New Mail Notification
  • Now you can use the Browse button under the Sounds header to select a new sound
  • Press Apply and OK

How to mail a web page

Click the Mail button on the Internet Explorer 4 toolbar, and you will notice something new in addition to the long-standing "Read Mail", "New Message" and "Send a Link" choices you may remember from earlier versions of Mail. The Send Page option lets you ship off the entire HTML source code of the page you are viewing. If your recipients have e-mail clients that can view HTML files directly, they won't have to connect to the Web to view the page.

Before you send the message select Send Pictures with message From the Tools menu. This will show the pictures as inline images, not as attachments!
